One event on December 23, 2023 at 7:00 pm

Simon’s program will explore the stories behind some of our most cherished seasonal music. Learn the answers to these questions:
–Which singer had a hit Christmas song in two consecutive years, with two different songs?
–Which Christmas song was composed by a San Francisco jazzman?
–What was the Christmas lyric that Judy Garland refused to sing?
–Which hit Christmas song was popularized by a veterinarian and his wife?
–Which Christmas song author-singer-producer appeared in the Alfred Hitchcock thriller “Rear Window”?
Between these backstories of familiar songs, Simon will play seasonal carols and songs on musical instruments from around the world. The program includes a pair of Hanukah carols sung in Yiddish, as well as African-American songs collected in New Bern that have been incorporated into New Bern’s Jonkonnu Celebration. The exotic instruments include a nyckelharpa from Sweden; a joura from Greece; a rajao from Madeira; and an erhu from China.
Sara Spalding will sing and play in the program, joining Simon on voice, guitar, and other instruments.
The program will be offered on December 22 & 23. The doors open at 6:30, and the music begins at 7:00 pm. NBCT’s Studio Theater is located at 412 Pollock Street in New Bern.
