The Dilemma:

We’ve all been there—you want to make a good impression on Valentine’s Day. You’ve got the right outfit, flowers, chocolate, the perfect playlist ready for the car, and you’ve already bought the movie tickets. The problem is that nowhere seems quite the right for dinner. Maybe you’re a parent, and you feel like finding a decent babysitter on the most popular date night of the year was a triumph in and of itself. Maybe you’re a working couple who is reclaiming time for each other instead of losing it to endless meetings and business trips. Maybe it’s your first Valentine’s Day with someone, but you think this one is really going somewhere. Maybe you’re just trying somewhere new for a romantic getaway and aren’t entirely sure what the local area has to offer.
Fortunately, we have just the thing for any situation! Downtown New Bern boasts historic buildings, unique architecture, colorful inhabitants, and a texture that can only be experienced in person. We also have truly excellent restaurants! No matter where you go, you are guaranteed great service and food you’ll remember, and then come back for. While we can’t say a disparaging word about any of our wonderful restaurants downtown, there are a few places worth taking note of, especially on the most romantic night of the year.

 1. Christoph’s on the Water

First thing’s first, if you want to get into this exclusive Valentines’ Day experience, you MUST make reservations in advance, but it’s definitely worth it! Not only will you get to dine with comfort and excellent service that locals, and returning guests alike, have come to expect when patronizing Christoph’s, but you will also get to choose a first course, entrée, and dessert from a specially crafted menu. An evening at Christoph’s will definitely impress, and leave a lasting memory for years to come.

2. Persimmons Waterfront Restaurant

Another local favorite—Persimmons Waterfront Restaurant—is also putting a little pizzazz into their menu for the special evening. In addition to their regular menu, which is always excellent, they are serving a special tasting menu for the evening. Persimmons is known for their outstandingly fresh food, stunning waterfront views, and excellent service. A special meal at this establishment is a romantic gesture on any evening, but especially on Valentine’s Day. Though reservations may not be necessary for this event, with a menu this delicious, they are still encouraged!

3. Captain Ratty’s

Located in the heart of downtown, Captain Ratty’s is most easily identified by the colorful umbrellas fluttering in the breeze on the rooftop dining area. Though February 14 may be a little chilly to enjoy the outdoor section of seating, something special is brewing inside. The Captain will also be serving a special menu for couples (and food lovers) with a “Surf-and-Turf” theme. Lobster tail and filet will be served next to house vegetables and a salad. Call ahead for guaranteed seating at 6:00 pm or 8:00 pm in one of the two rooms upstairs, or walk in for first-come-first-served seating downstairs. Either way, it’ll be a meal your destined to remember fondly.
